Pellet Stoves
Before the 20th century, 90% of
Americans burned wood to heat their homes. As fossil fuel use rose,
the percentage of Americans using wood for fuel dropped, falling as
low as one percent by 1970. Then during the energy crises of the
1970s, interest in wood heating resurfaced as a renewable energy
alternative.

Newer on the scene are pellet stoves, which burn small pellets
that look like rabbit feed and measure 3/8 to 1 inch in length.
Pellets are made from compacted sawdust, wood chips, bark,
agricultural crop waste, waste paper, and other organic materials.

There are currently more than half a
million homes in North America using pellet stoves for heat,
and probably a similar number in Europe.
A pellet stove
typically uses a feed screw to transfer pellets from a storage hopper
to a combustion chamber.

Air is provided for the combustion by an
electric blower. The ignition is automatic, using a stream of air
heated by an electrical element. The rotation speed of the feeder and
the fan speeds can be varied to modulate the heat output. |
Corn Pellet Stove
A corn
pellet stove is a type of pellet stove which is a type of
biofuel stove. The shelled dry kernel of corn, also called a corn
pellet, creates as much heat as a wood pellet but generates more ash.
"Corn pellet stoves and wood pellet stoves look the same from the
outside. Since they are highly efficient, they don't need a chimney;
instead they can be vented outdoors by a four-inch pipe through an
outside wall and so can be located in any room in the home."
Encyclopedia of Alternative Energy
Corn kernels
are a source of renewable energy used in pellet stoves and furnaces.
Many stoves can use several types of fuel: corn, cherry pits, wood
pellets, etc.
Homeremodeling
They first became popular during the oil shortages of the 1970s. As
people became used to higher prices their popularity grew slowly. They
became more sophisticated, and more physically attractive. Most stoves
are now quite attractive. Commercial models are available, which can
heat large buildings, or be used to generate electricity.
The chief attraction of these corn pellet
stoves is fuel price. Corn kernels purchased in bulk, can
cost only 25% what heating oil, natural gas, or propane can. Because
it is a natural pellet it is more economical and is in greater supply
than manmade pellets in most areas. Wood pellets were in short supply,
in many areas, in 2005. Pellet manufacturers struggled to keep up with
demand. Source: Wikipedia |
